 Detailed Itinerary  

Day 1, Thu. DEPART USA.
Board your overnight flight to Budapest.

Day 2, Fri. ARRIVE IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY.
Arrive in Budapest and transfer to your hotel. Start exploring the city during the balance of the day.

Day 3, Sat. BUDAPEST.
Morning sightseeing includes historic Buda Castle, where you will have splendid views of the twin cities of Buda and Pest as well as the Danube. Also see 500-year-old Matthias Church, St. Stephen’s Basilica and distinctive Fisherman’s Bastion. (B)

Day 4, Sun. BUDAPEST.
A free morning. This afternoon transfer to your luxurious cruise ship. Tonight, gather on board for a Gala Welcome dinner with Gypsy violins. (B,D)

Day 5, Mon. KALOCSA.
Spend the morning in Kalocsa, renowned for its paprika production. Visit the Paprika Museum, then admire a show of equestrian prowess performed by the csikos, traditional wranglers in their picturesque costumes. There’s time to browse for local embroidery. Then sail past historical Mohács, where the Turkish victory in 1526 determined the destiny of Hungary for the next 150 years. (B,L,D)

Day 6, Tue. CRUISING.
It’s an unforgettable day on the Danube, with beautiful vistas of Marshal Vauban’s unconquerable Petrovaradin Fortress at Novi Sad. In a special lecture, learn about the dramatic events of the recent past which shape both the present and future of this region resplendent with natural beauty and a proud history. (B,L,D)

Day 7, Wed. BELGRADE, SERBIA.
Your expertly guided morning sightseeing tour features Kalemegdan Fortress,
the world’s largest Orthodox Church of St. Sava and the Karadorde Monument. Former Yugoslavia’s Communist past is relived for you at the tomb of its founder, Marshal Tito. Spend the evening at the popular Bohemian Skadarlija district and taste some of the finest local fare. (B,L,D)

Day 8, Thu. THE IRON GATE / BULGARIA.
Pass the Serbian fortresses of Smederevo and Golubac and the legendary Trajan’s Table, then head through the Danube’s most dramatic gorge, the Iron Gate. The impressive Djerdap hydroelectric project is the subject of a specially organized lecture this afternoon. (B,L,D)

Day 9, Fri. VELIKO TURNOVO / ROUSSE.
Admire the ancient capital of Bulgaria, Veliko Turnovo on the banks of the Yantra river. Famous Tsarevets Hill, home of the Royal Fortress and the Patriarchate, is well worth a visit. Browse through the local handicraft market this afternoon and continue to the museum town of Arbanassi for a visit. See the Ethnographical Museum and the Church of the Nativity. Rejoin your cruise ship at Rousse. (B,L,D)

Day 10, Sat. BLACK SEA CANAL / CONSTANTA, ROMANIA.
The pride and joy of Communist achievement, the 40-mile long Black Sea Canal, is yours to marvel at this morning while sailing to Constanta. A comprehensive tour of Constanta highlights the Natural History Museum, Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, and a drive to the premier seaside resort of Mamaia. (B,L,D)

Day 11, Sun. OLTENITA / BUCHAREST.
Bid farewell to your cruise ship this morning and transfer to your hotel in Bucharest. On a sightseeing tour, admire the sights of Romania’s lively capital. The highlight of your tour is a
visit to the National Art Museum, housed in the former Royal Palace. (B)

Day 12, Mon. DEPART BUCHAREST.
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Extra nights are available if you wish to extend your stay in Europe. (B)

Day 12, Mon. A free day in Bucharest gives you a chance to browse the shops and visit many of the attractions of this city known as the “Paris of the East.” (B)

Day 13, Tue. An excursion takes you first to Bran Castle of Dracula fame, built in 1377 and ever since assumed to be the home of the Romanian vampires. Then into the Carpathians to Sinaia to visit the monastery built in memory of Mihail Cantacuzino’s visit to Mt. Sinai. Enjoy lunch in this mountain resort before visiting the former royal summer palace of Peles Castle, a blend of Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles from the late 19th century. (B,L)

Day 14, Wed. Transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Extra nights are available if you wish to extend your stay in Europe. (B)
